For quite some time we have heard talk of a tell all book in the works that threatens to expose the down-low world of hip hop artists. The author of the book, former MTV producer Terrance Dean, announced that he has sold Hiding in Hip-Hop: Confessions of a Down Low Brother in the Entertainment Industry to Atria recently. The book is now scheduled to hit store bookshelves next month.
Hiding in Hip-Hop we are told details "the author's life as a closeted homosexual working in the film and music industry and his relationships with other closeted homosexuals -- film stars, rap artists, and music producers..." Dean himself said "This book is filled with intrigue, sexy celebrity bed partners, abundance of drugs, and of course, the down low/gay men and celebrities in the entertainment industry."
Early reports indicate that the author will not actually name names but a spokesperson for the publishing company said "the real-life personas of down-low men that Dean describes in Hiding in Hip-Hop will be easy to decipher."
I hate to admit it but I am anxious for the release of this book. Hip-hop has always been one of the most homophobic industries in all of entertainment. Those tough street hard gay hating thug rappers must be shaking in their Timberlands boots worried that their secret lives will be put on blast. Normally I would be opposed to disclosures such as these but when people spit words of hate against the very activity they routinely participate in then they need to be called out.

hmmm, i don't know, i'm kinda on the fence about this one. on one hand, exposing liars is always a good thing. but on the other hand, not naming names and throwing vague references seems sophomore not shrewd. obviously, this guy only cares about the dollar, but i'm not sure how to react to it.
I'm on the fence as well, I hope this doesn't drag us through the mud like JL King did
i gotta agree with the two brothas before me. this approach is very "superhead-ish" of him. feed into the drama/lore of hip hop secret gay/DL society (and gossip) while maintaining the brothas anonymity? sounds like a paper chase to me and not a cautionary tale... hope "they" don't try and bash his head in like they tried to get superhead.
Hype Hype & more Hype.
I agree with all you brothas.
It's sad that sensationalism sells not sincerity.
I feel if you gonna cum(sp) cum(sp) hard. It his memoirs so Iguess he is entitled to write whatever and we are entitled to wait until the smoke clears.
I remember reading an article about this dude and his yet-to-be-published tell-all book a year or two ago. I didn't think anything of it. More sensationalized junk, I thought. It'll be interesting how much airtime the media devotes to it and how members of the hip-hop community will respond. As to whether I'll buy the book or whether I'm all that interested? I can't really say at this point. But again, I will be interested in seeing how it's perceived.
i think that not naming names is great, because he can't get in trouble for slander and whomever is accused can't come out and deny it without looking guilty...
....as far as changing the way our community looks at gays goes, i don't exactly know how that would work, it may actually cause more dislike toward the gay community. Only time will tell....
